The District Nominating Committee Chair is a crucial, short-term volunteer leadership position in the District tasked with securing the executive future of the local district. Formally appointed by the District Chair and approved by the Council President, this individual runs an independent committee to identify, interview, and select a slate of top-caliber community leaders to serve as District Officers and Members-at-Large for the upcoming year.

This role operates under strict regulatory timelines—primarily between August and November—culminating in the presentation of the official ballot at the District Annual Business Meeting.

 

Core Responsibilities

The primary objective of the Nominating Committee Chair is to manage an objective, balanced talent acquisition process:

• Committee Assembly & Leadership: Recruit a small, objective sub-committee of two to three highly respected community or Scouting leaders. Schedule and chair at least two formal committee sessions to review district leadership needs.

• Identify Leadership Candidates: Collaborate with the professional District Executive (DE) and current District Key 3 to pinpoint vacancies or areas needing reinforcement. Source potential candidates from local businesses, school systems, civic groups, and past Scouting leaders.

• Vetting and Slate Creation: Screen prospects to ensure they possess the necessary professional skill sets, time commitment, and values aligned with Scouting America. Draft a unified "slate of nominees" for positions including the District Chair, Vice-Chairs, and functional committee chairs (such as Training, Advancement, and Membership).

• Coordinate the Appointment of the District Commissioner: Work in close consultation with the District Executive to formally recommend a District Commissioner candidate to the Council Executive Board for final commissioning.

• Preside Over the Election Process: Present the completed slate of nominees at the District Annual Business Meeting. Oversee the official voting process by the eligible voting body (Chartered Organization Representatives and current Members-at-Large) to ensure compliance with Scouting America bylaws.
