The District Camping (or Camping Promotion) Chair is a volunteer administrative leader within the District. Reporting to the District Committee Chair, this individual is responsible for ensuring that all youth in the district have access to high-quality outdoor adventures and that local units are actively participating in year-round camping programs.

Rather than running an individual unit's campouts, the District Camping Chair works strategically across the entire territory to promote council long-term camps, monitor unit outdoor records, track outdoor safety, and oversee large district-wide events like Cuborees or Camporees.

Core Responsibilities

The primary duties of the District Camping Chair focus on promotion, data tracking, safety, and event oversight:

• Promote Outdoor and Long-Term Programs: Implement the local council's outdoor promotional plan across the district. This involves presenting information about summer resident camps, Webelos winter camps, and National High-Adventure bases (Philmont, Northern Tier, Sea Base, and the Summit) to local units.

• Track Unit Camping Records: Monitor and review each unit's annual camping record to identify groups that are not utilizing the outdoor program. Provide targeted support and resources to those struggling units.

• Coordinate District Outdoor Events: Provide oversight and leadership for district-hosted outdoor events, primarily acting as an advisor or supervisor for the District Cub Scout Cuboree and the annual Scouts BSA Camporee.

• Health and Safety Guidance: Ensure that all district camping activities align strictly with national policies outlined in the Scouting America Guide to Safe Scouting. Help verify that proper permits and tour plans are utilized when required.

• Support Unit Planning: Collaborate with the District Commissioner staff to help local Packs, Troops, Crews, and Ships build robust, age-appropriate, year-round outdoor calendars.
